Music: Morgan Geist makes it good mix!

Morgan Geist of Metro Area -who was recently brought to Boston by our friends of "Where's the love" - has done the latest mix of the now classic "We Make it Good" Series. (Don't forget to check out Chris Devlin's if you haven't yet) Here's what he had to say:

“This little mix is obviously inspired by the original Cosmic DJs (Baldelli) and innovative DJs of (or nearer to) my own generation, like DJ Harvey and Daniel Wang. I made sure to include some records that I thought I “discovered” on my own, only to hear them played by other (better) DJs who probably knew about them a lot longer than I did. Parallel evolution is a bitch, but I didn’t want to abandon these beloved tracks just because they were “marked” by another DJ. For example, most DJs who know the Transfer Station Blue track associate it with Sarcastic Disco, the infamous and beautiful Harvey mix – yet I believe I got my first copy of it from my departed friend, Barry Lederer, and associate it with digging and listening and learning in his dusty old apartment on 24th Street in Manhattan. I find Harvey inspirational, but don’t want my own Barry-nostalgia supplanted. I realize it sounds corny, but sometimes you have to reclaim music that is important to you, and that’s what a lot of this mix is about for me. – Morgan Geist (Environ, Unclassics, Metro Area)”

Music: Metro Area

Photobucket
Last week we gave you a huge rant about remembering 2002 and truth be told, I can't believe we forgot to mention Metro Area. The first time I heard about Metro Area it involved them sharing the B side with an edit of Gina X on Joakim's Tiger Sushi. Their Self titled album was an instant classic. A mix of Disco/Boogie and other styles was really ahead of their time and together with the Disco revivalist of Brooklyn, the current scene we much enjoy became what it is today. Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani hosted a monthly residency at APT in the Meatpacking District, called Party Out of Bounds...because apparently only good shit happens in NYC. Perhaps what characterized the appeal of Metro Area early on was their versatility and the perfectly executed composition of their music. From Techno fans to House Heads to Disco Enthusiasts to Just plain Indie-rock-Pitchfork readers, Metro Area have always received critical acclaim from those who've listened to their music. In 2002 while DFA was still a label with a couple of releases, Tim Goldsworthy and James Murphy remixed Metro Area's Orange Alert...and to repay the favor, Morgan Geist Remixed House of Jealous Lovers by the Rapture. Two Classics born from one collaboration. There are a lot of players when it comes to redefining a generation in Music...sometimes some get more glory than others...Metro Area just happened to be there in the beginning. So don't miss a little part of History. Metro Area will be at Goodlife tomorrow night for their first ever Boston Gig. See ya there.
