Music: Ciao Bello Ciao Tiga!

It's official...Disco is taking over the Dance World again. I know we've been bloggin' and bloggin' about it since we started this little Blog of Bostoncentric Dance non-sense, but day after day more and more artist have started to embrace the inner disco-boogie in them. Last week we posted Soulwax's newest radio mix and Disco (cosmic & Italo) it was indeed. Not surprisingly, Soulwax is also responsible for most of Tiga's new Album which will also have major contribution (vocally) by James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem/DFA fame. What I'm I really saying? I don't know but I feel like a freaking Disco Nostradamous. That's alright...we've got some surprises for you to download pretty soon. Music: Too Much Radio Soulwax!!!

These two Crazy Belgians keep outdoing themselves in the Craziest ways possible. First they pretty much invented Mash-Ups (or at least did them flawlessly and way better than Diplo) Then they made a Dance Rock album just to Remix it themselves and take it on the Road. They now have a documentary and a portfolio of Remixes that reads like a list of what's been cool in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008. my point is that these two are the saviours of music. Recently, they took over Rob Da Bank's show on BBC Radio 1 and did a 60 minute mix of just intros. WTF!!! Yes, Just Intros!!! I'd post the tracklisting here but it's 420 tracks long. I think you get the point. However if you are so inclined, go to Rob Da Banks page and geek out like you've never geeked before. And you know what's better? They even made another 60 minute Disco Mix full of rare gems from the past and some nu/cosmic tracks worth checking out. Enjoy it...put it on your ipod and when people ask you why you're smiling, just say: RADIO SOULWAX!!!!

Music: Part of the NYE never dies!!!

Wow...The folks over at mixmag with yet another solid mix from Soulwax. I believe this might be the second. Last time we heard a mix from them on Mixmag, Justice was relatively new and the Erol Alkan Remix of Franz Ferdinand was hot bumping stuff... Digitalism did not have an LP yet but their tracks on Kitsune were playing all over the place. It was February 06 and while a lot of things change, a lot of them stay the same (but thank god for this tracklist!!!). It's almost time to go home for the holidays and wear that Rudolf Sweater (I know...), but relax, plug in your headphones and take a listen...You'll know exactly what you'll want your New Year's to be like!!!

Music: Kids (like belgian waffles...I like women)

Ok...Let me be completely honest with all of you. My ears are sore from listening to the new MGMT remix of "Kids". God knows I love Soulwax, but this time I was shocked in disappointment and to call the remix a "nite version" is just utterly ridiculous. I hope this never makes it as an official release because I know I'll probably buy it anyways, even if it is this awful. I mean, this is like a stab in the back. I just watched "part of the weekend never dies" and it made me love those two Belgian Brothers even more, but this, this just breaks my heart. On paper one could say this is probably the remix of the year, but when the sound of it is so clique' one would hope it never happened. I guess I'm just becoming bitter, but everyday that passes, that sweet electro sound no longer does it for me. Electro...is this the end? Are we not lovers anymore? Have you ran out of ideas and beats? Were you just a fling like Electroclash was? Where did we go wrong? I know... It was all those American Apparel Hipsters. Maybe it's no one's fault...maybe it's just time to move on. I just hope this is not our last kiss.

Music/Film: Part of the Weekend Never Dies (The Review)

It's been probably way too long since we last wrote on the blog and frankly it was a necessary break. I'm not gonna bore you with sentimentalism/spirituality/reality checks (although just checks would be nice $$$) or anything remotely personal and introspective (cause I'm the worst at it). But after all, Manifest Destitute is a world for those who dream and those who Dance...and those who live each weekend like it was their last.

If you haven't seen Soulwax's "Part of the Weekend never dies" then you probably don't love Music all that much. If you haven't the faintest idea of What Soulwax or what 2 Many DJ's do/are, this nice little package will without a doubt indoctrinate you into the Gospel that is Nite Versions while making you believe Jesus is actually two brothers from Belgium whose goal is to save the world from bad music. Yeah ok...we really liked the documentary but trust me, we are pretty sure you will too.

There's bands that are good, there's bands that are awesome, there's bands that get press, and then there is Soulwax. In my mind they must be like the most underrated band/act that actually matters. I can guarantee you that they've been an influence to all the wanna be DJ's (like me) who've ever done a mashup in their bedroom. Also... Yeah I know it's kind of en vogue (or at least it was a couple years back) for rock bands to have keyboards, but how often do you see a dance act actually just play instruments and do it so effortlessly. Not to even mention the fact they DJ with a live band (who does that?). Yeah, this is where James Murphy bitches and says he does it too or even better, but truth be told Mr. Murphy, You are from North America (and LCD Soundsystem is just a rock band playing electronic music). People from Europe grow on French bread, Nutella and cheesy house music. Soulwax tried to be a rock band and they failed...But that's ok because the grass is just so much greener on the Disco side. Needless to say, I love Soulwax! I'm like the Japanese chick at the end of the trailer. I drank the Kool-Aid back in the days of Too Many DJ's volume 2 and i haven't looked back. If we ever wanted to live in music Harmony, they would be the Embassadors of all things Dance-Rock. I wish they would make something mediocre for a change...you know, just to even up the field. I still hope one day they'll come to Boston because going to NYC and Philly just doesn't go well with my lazy ass. So this is my message to all Boston promoters: Poppa needs his Soulwax and he needs is BAD!!! Oh... did i forget to mention this post was supposed to be about the DVD that's coming out? No wonder i don't get paid to do this...

Music: The General is Back!!!

In the 90's Big Beat took the UK by storm, and although Wall of Sound brought artist like Les Rythmes Digitales and the Propellerheads to the charts, it was Fatboy Slim and SKINT that really stood up as the "it" Big Beat Label. As Norman Cook became the most successful DJ in the planet, the label kept producing hit after hit, and in my opinion kinda losing their appeal in the process. But life is like that and the industry unforgiving. Here at Manifest Destitute however WE FIRMLY BELIEVE IN COMEBACKS, and it's for that reason that we are happy to see that Damian Harris aka Midfield General is back. He comes back with a record SO relevant to today's scene that it barely resembles the Skint days. After having run that label for 11 years, the General finally went back to what he loved best....Making Music. Like many who travel to Paris for inspiration, he found exactly that "je ne sais quoi" he needed to finish an album he'd been working on for 8 years. While in paris, he also provided a Remix for Krazy Baldheads’ track Crazy Moth3f2ck8z (Ed Banger). In my opinion, it was better than the original.

His first single "Disco Sirens" is produced by Xavier de Rosnay from Justice, mixed by Soulwax and features vocals by Vila from the Bumblebeez. With mixes from Boy 8-Bit, Chicken Lips and D.I.M. this is sure to become one of the big hits of the year. However, the standout track for me so far has been 137 Piano. An almost dub-step track that steps up the tempo with a light breakbeat feel. I definitely recommend that one. Disco Sirens out now. General Disarray out later this month.
