Music: I was caught In Flagranti!!! (Meaow)

...No not really but we did catch the In Flagranti bug and we can't rub it off. The Brooklyn duo has been making some really contemporary Disco at a time when the Disco Edit and retro vibes reign Supreme. No wonder the duo of Disco Virtuosos has been recently signed to Kitsune for the release of their 12" Single "Business Acumen"....and While Kitsune's been slacking lately, this release puts them back on track (at least for the time being) not to mention they've got Holy Ghosts to do a remix. Don't be fooled though, In Flagranti has been releasing material for years out of the label Codek and their Arsenal is strong enough to start a revolution. And If you read the Big Stereo Blog religiously like i do, you might have caught In flagranti's live set at Infatuation (from last May). if not, well here you go. "Business Acumen" out now on Kitsune. (Buy it here!)

Music: Cut Copy (...Paste some Disco)

Cut Copy's "In Ghost Colours" album keeps hemorrhaging remixes like it's sweeps week on ER. This time around, their song "Far Away" gets a Disco re-rub by Hercules & Love Affair (DFA) and up and coming Damn Arms (Bang Gang). And what is it with the term "Nu-Disco"? It's not like Disco ever went away...Well, I'm gonna try not to use it because it just sounds silly. Agree? Remember when you bought a disco 12" and it actually said "Disco Sound" on the sleeve? That's exactly how i want things labeled...even in my kitchen. Oh yeah, No offense but it seems to me like Andy Buttler didn't get paid enough for the remix (AKA...it's kinda whatever). Damn Arms on the other "hand" probably would have done it for free (oh yeah, it's really that good). So keep an eye on them...they sound promising. Far Away 12" Single out Nov 24th on Modular.

Lazy Sunday: I need you now!!!

Sinnamon was probably better known for tracks like "He's gonna take you home" or "Thank you"
which spent two weeks at #1 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart back in '82. But the real jam for me has always been "I Need You Now". Listening to this track always makes me feel funny because of the lyrics but the instrumentation is pretty much on point. Sometimes I wonder if all DFA Artist go through Disco Boot camp because this sounds a lot like Holy Ghost's "Hold on" (Call me crazy but the Synth lines are very familar).

Lazy Sunday: I love you Dancer!!! (AKA Prancy Dan-Cuh)

Yes, Here at Manifest Destitute, Dancers are always appreciated, and Voyage's Disco classic "I love you Dancer" is our tune for the day. The European Group was probably better known for other singles like "souvenirs" or "from east to west" but I love you Dancer is by far our favorite. So if you know any Dancers, give them a call or a hug...sometimes they want to be loved too.

Film: "Wild Combination"

Last Sunday I had the pleasure to squeeze a film at the MFA into my busy schedule. The film was Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell by Matthew Wolf. "Wild Combination is a visually absorbing portrait of the seminal avant-garde composer, singer-songwriter, cellist, and DISCO PRODUCER. Before his untimely death from AIDS in 1992, Russell prolifically created music that spanned both pop and the transcendent possibilities of abstract art. Now, over fifteen years since his passing, Arthur's work is finally finding its audience and a new generation is discovering his work thanks to his longtime partner Tom Lee. Wolf incorporates rare archival footage and commentary from Arthur's family, friends, and closest collaborators—including Philip Glass and Allen Ginsberg—to tell this poignant and important story."

The synopsis apart, the documentary was quite brilliantly put together and of course the music sort of speaks for itself. If you are not familiar with Arthur Russel's work, check the you tube videos below to refreshen somethings you might have heard before. And Don't forget to catch it at the MFA today @ 6:15pm or tomorrow at 6pm...It might be your last chance before trying to find it on DVD.

Lazy Sunday: I like What You're Doing To Me (Babee)

I could say so much about this track...and will somehow include it in my wedding bows (seriously!!!) but for now let's just enjoy the fact that it's Lazy Sunday and "I like What You're Doing To Me". This Disco Gem courtesy of Young and Company has so much groove It's hard not to fall in love with it. Can you feel the love? We did.

Lazy Sunday: Two Man Sound

The Belgian band Two Man Sound is best known for "Qué Tal America," their international underground disco anthem of 1979. The 12" story seems to be that this was first released on the Canadian Attic label in 1978 - a different version to the US version released the following year - which was also repressed in 1981. Possibly one of the best basslines of any disco track ever. There's no video for this so enjoy "Disco Samba" Instead...

ps: I got this stuff on Vinyl in case you were wondering.

I know Soulwax likes Disco but who knew it was actually a Belgian tradition.

Best Disco track EVER!!!

Music: Hercules and Love Affair (DFA)

New from DFA Records. Hercules and Love Affair is one of the newest things from Brooklyn. The Brainchild of of producer/DJ Andrew Butler, Hercules and Love Affair has already garnered a lot of attention for the vocal support of Antony (of Antony & The Johnsons fame). Music: Merry Rapping Christmas!!!!

Little history in case you didn't know...

Christmas Rappin' by Kurtis Blow: Download

This was the first Hip-Hop song released on a major label. Kurtis recorded this with the help of producers Robert Ford and J.B. Moore. They took it to Mercury Records, who signed Kurtis to a 2-single deal, under the condition that If both singles were successful, he would get an album deal. This was the first single, and it did very well. The second single was "The Breaks," and it became the first rap song to be certified as a gold record, selling over 500,000 copies. Kurtis got the album deal and became the first rapper signed to a major label.

Christmas in Hollis by Run DMC: Download

It's hard to believe Run DMC's "Christmas in Hollis" came out 20 years ago. The song was included on the 1987 A Very Special Christmas album, the first in a series of compilations to benefit the Special Olympics.

Millie Pulled a Pistol on Santa by De La Soul: Download

Great rap single from 1991 with a message that definitely clashes with the season. Millie is the daughter of the singer's social worker, suffering sexual abuse at her father's hands. Dad has a side gig as a Macy's Santa; you can see where this is going. Powerful stuff, but you might not want to hoist eggnog toasts while it's playing.

Santa's Rap Party by Super Jay: Download

For Y'all Disco heads, here's an underground pearl...courtesy of Peter Brown. He first came to fame with the first million-selling 12" dance single, "Do Ya Wanna Get Funky With Me." Brown was a pioneer in home recording, having recorded his seminal hit in his bedroom. (His '70s-era home recording studio is pictured on the cover of Westside/DNA's Get Funky With Me: The Best of the TK Years.) He also co-wrote Madonna's 1985 pop hit, "Material Girl,". Not too bad huh.

Music: Diana Ross...Queen of Disco and MOB

In my mind Donna Summer will always be the one with the jams, but there's no denial Lady Diana will always be the "Most Official Bitch". Mug shots and crack/cocaine apart, the lady is perhaps one of the greatest female entertainers who did not need a boob job to catch my eye. Girl really turns me "upside down". Check her in this video with the man who loves children more than Jesus or the teletubbies do.
