Event: Maurice Fulton @ Phoenix Landing (03.08.09)

It's been a rough week here at Manifest Destitute since our Digital Mistress that is our MacBook Pro took a hit for us. Now her pretty Screen is broken and I'm afraid she might have to go on retirement or simply become a stay at home mom. Either way we still love her and although she no longer can sit on my lap, our heart goes out to her...Oh the tears.

But on a different note, tomorrow is a special night for all electronic music aficionados in our little city of Boston! The one and only Maurice Fulton will be joining us at the Phoenix Landing for his first appearance in Boston. Currently, Maurice might be best know for his Syclops project on DFA Records, but trust me when we tell you that his curriculum runs deep when it comes to production. Maurice is an anomaly in the electronic music scene. He has been around the block in more ways than one, not only did he have a hand in producing Gypsy Woman by Crystal Waters, one of the most successful house tunes of the early '90s; he is the darling of both the underground house and leftfield scenes with an enviable back catalogue. With an approach to production close to that of a Mad Scientist, Maurice is an Institution when it comes electronic and House music. As a DJ, his first love is Funk but recently we've seen him drop more Disco and Boogie so we know the Music is gonna just how we like it on a Lazy Sunday. Opening Sets by Brenden Wesley (Solar Disco) and Jason B (Bonanza).

Music: Radio like transmission caused by Hot Chips...

This is actually one for my Brother...who unfortunately I don't see much. I still remember when I introduced him to Joy Division and I can't really say but i think it changed his life like it changed mine. Anyways, before i get too sentimental, here's something that we found on the blogosphere. I feel everyone should check this out and go spend a few bucks for a good cause. War ain't a joke and it's usually children who suffer the most. And while music might not be the answer to stop conflict, it does have an incredible power to heal. Go do the right thing and support War Child! In the mean time, here's a sample of this incredible cover album with some of today's most critically acclaimed artists.

Video: James Murphy is a Disco Bully...just ask Hot Chip

Hot Chip - Wrestler (DFA records)

Ok...this song is really not their greatest accomplishment, but nonetheless it's still pretty entertaining. What's hilarious though is the video that accompanies it, with James Murphy as a Martial Arts Disco Bully. Well...i guess it just goes to show how cool DFA is right now as they prepare themselves for world domination again (but more on that later). So while we wait for some of DFA's big newcomers to guest at Akult next month (you'll see...), join us at Goodlife tonight for a fun night of Disco with resident DJ Brenden Wesley and new pal John Barrera.

Music: Wiley Grimey & Dizzee Like Weezy

It was only time before Grime invaded our Dancefloors and surprisingly, it took way longer than expected. Recently we've seen Dizzee Razcal pair up with Bun B with a track that pushes the boundaries of Hip Hop without even trying. Similarly, Wiley's "Wearing my rolex transforms itself into THE Dancefloor banger in every DJ's set regardless of the genre. In the UK, Grime has been at the forefront of electronic music and Hip Hop, partly because of the popularity of Two Step and Drum&Bass in the late nineties. Now with the rise of Dubstep and the nostalgia for the heavy "rave style" synth bass, Urban music has a new palette to work from as you can see in the sets of DJ's such as Herve & Sinden. With all genres of music cross-pollinating back and forth, it is plausible we'll be listening to electro-rock-trance-hall pretty soon. Who knows, maybe we'll actually like it.

Dizzee Rascal - Where's the G's
Wiley - Wearing my Rolex
Hot Chip - Wearing my Rolex (Cover)

Just to show how a setting can make or break a video...this was flawless.

Music: New on DFA!!!

So it finally dropped. The Hercules & Love Affair album is out now and yes, even with all the hype from the singles, it didn't disappoint. If anything, this album is freaking outstanding!!!. There are a couple non-dance tracks which are good as they highlight Antony's voice, but the real bread and butter of this album are the tracks that make us remember the early Trax sound and the more intelligent Disco of the early 80's (Y'all remember Larry Levan and Arthur Russell right?). All in all there's a couple tracks that I'm sure will end up packaged with killer remixes and I'm willing to put money right now that the next singles will be "Raise me up" and "You Belong". I recently had a conversation with Brendan Wesley from AKult who claims this is gonna be the "new shit". Let's hope he's right and let's hope the boys bring them to Boston like they did with Holy Ghost a couple months ago.

Also out now, Juan Mclean's new single "Happy House" with more interesting vocals from Nancy Wang. I've heard somewhere she'll be touring with them full-time. Let's wait and see. Don't forget Hot Chip is coming to Boston April 14th so please be "ready for the floor".
