Lazy Sunday: I say Captain...You say Wot!!! (aka when Hip Hop met Punk)

There is no denying that Hip Hop has been an influential force in our culture over the past 30 years. Magically though, somewhere in the 80's Hip Hop made an impression on an odd group of Punks and gave them the inspiration to give it a try of their own. Captain Sensible's "WOT" though almost a Rap Parody, it still labeled in Europe as an early hip hop classic. The Ex-Dammed singer was not however the only UK Punk to get the Hip Hop fever. Malcolm Mclaren of Sex Pistols fame, made a record collaborating with the "World's Famous Supreme Team" DJs (Hey DJ being their legacy) as well as graphically setting the tone of the record with art work by Grafitti Legends Keith Haring and Dondi White. At the time when Mclaren crafted "Duck Rock" though, it had been a couple of years since The Clash had released "Radio Clash" in which video one can actually spot Futura 2000 spray painting across New York City. The Influence of Hip Hop is quite obvious in this record, and their dedication was later reflected when Grandmaster Flash was asked to be the opening act for the Band. Futura and the Clash would later go into partnership again when they produced Futura 2000's "Escapades".

But perhaps the greatest document of the partnership between genres was Blondie's "Rapture" which united the vibrant Downtown scene to the new sounds coming from Uptown. In the song not only does Debby Harry do her own rapping, but she also gives shout outs to her new friends from the hip hop scene (Flash and Fab 5 Freddy). Perhaps the Video is even better, as we actually get to see some of the Artists do Cameos (including the gifted Jean-Michel Basquiat and other Lower East Side scenester). In some ways, the influence between Punk and Hip Hop was actually reciprocated when bands like ESG and Liquid Liquid were sampled by hip hop artists and most memorably when Grandmaster Flash sampled the Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love" (which in itself was a record influenced by Hip Hop). Although these were the conception of a very special time in our culture, the legacy that Hip Hop left on Punk Artists of that era was an important platform for the popularity of the genre in years to come. Here are some of those memorable moments...because it's Lazy Sunday and Lazy Sunday is always classic!

Yes... Hercules & Love Affair come back with their third single July 7th and like we predicted it months ago, "You Belong" had to be a strong contender to follow "blind". With Remixes by Riton, and House Legend Kevin Sanderson, this new single is probably our favorite release from them. I know people keep mentioning them as a "Disco Revolution" but really all they did was pay homage to the great dance music that came before them... and don't get me wrong, they are the best at it right now. It's no wonder they already had Frankie Knuckles remix a track for them and to have Kevin Sanderson do another just seems like the logical progression. While we wait for the single to come out on vinyl and cd (or digitally for y'all serato fans) here's the video...and if you haven't bought the Album yet, go do that today...you're missing out on a little piece of history.

The new album "cloudbuster" should be out in June and featuring vocals from ASIA ARGENTO, Matty Safer (from THE RAPTURE) and German 70's movie icons KLAUS LEMKE and TELONIUS.

So Pharrell is at it again with his N.E.R.D crew, but really, it's sounds more like someone needed to take a break from Nigo and the Billionaire Boys Club.... In any case it's good to know N.E.R.D have come back strong with an album that takes influence from the scene they sort of gave birth to (at least in fashion), and from the sounds of the current Hipster Dance scene. "Everyone Nose" from their upcoming album "Seeing Sounds" is a hit that has been already playing at clubs and House Parties all the way from Brooklyn to Hong Kong. An Ode to all girls doing Colombia's fines export, "Everyone Nose" combines what Baltimore would sound played by a live band with moments of distinguished piano lines a la Coldplay (I know... kill me for that comment). It's kinda rare that a song with such a ridiculous theme and energy actually sounds so beautiful at times. I know I gave Pharrell crap about the upcoming Madonna single, but you know...we are all about redemption here! As for the video...It kinda reminds of that website with Party pics... no, not this one, I mean the the good one, you know, the one with hip ladies showing more boobies than a softcore porno. Oh Snap! They were the one's taking the pictures! "Everyone Nose" out now...Catch N.E.R.D Live tomorrow on the Glow in the Dark Tour with Kanye West and Lupe Fiasco @ The Tweeter Center.

Video: Justice against gang violence!!!

What's with French people and being gansta? C'est ci pasque ils aiment le hip-hop? Well... this new video for "Stress" by Justice is straight up G and not in the Gay Unit kinda way. The Video actually reminds me a bit of Mathieu Kassovitz's cult film "La Haine"(Hate). The movie follows a bunch of kids from the burbs (that's the hood in France) as they go around Paris causing commotion and smoking some reefer (probably hashish), but believe me, the movie is way more complex and actually expresses a strong social commentary. Anyways I recommend you to watch that movie because it doesn't get more real than that. As for the Justice Video, well, just watch it.
