Music: Matthew Dearest...

Matthew Dear of Ghostly international has been pretty prolific with some interesting singles recently so it was about time someone gave him proper remix duties. With a sound that touches remarkably close to genres of the past, his singles have always been a staple on minimal sets, But for his newest single "Pom Pom", we get the proper dose of DFA in Juan MacLean's reworking of the track. The Single by the way has 4 tracks, and all are remixed by Maclean to ensure there is absolutely no filler. The Perfect track for the upcoming Halloween festivities. And if you're in NY next Friday, don't forget to Catch Matthew Dear as Audion @Studio B.

Music/Event: Runaway comes to Akult!!!

Photobucket
After their big debut on DFA, Brooklyn's Jacques Renault and Macros Cabral (aka Runaway) are back in Boston to give us one more night of Disco infused sounds at Akult's Disco Emporium (@ the Goodlife bar). If you haven't heard their track yet, "Brooklyn Club Jam takes elements from old school house, acid, and disco and melds them together into a chugging dancefloor mover that'll work at both the sophisticated club and the grimey warehouse"- And trust me, the folks at NY's Turntable Lab know EXACTLY what they are talking about. Here at Manifest Destitute we've been listening to this track for a minute now and we love it, but we are definitely grooving more to Brennan Green's version. It's all you want to expect from a House music piano riff, the Disco drums from heaven and a bass line so catchy you'd wish it was the beginning to "funky town". I hope DFA stops making singles this good, because it's really not fair to my pocket. I need to pay my rent and GOD knows James Murphy ain't paying my bills. Oh, did I forget to mention Runway are coming this Saturday to Goodlife in an all DFA Records sponsored event? What?...Get out of here!!! But for real, don't miss the party of the Fall this Saturday. The event will be brought to you by the good folks at WERS, The Weekly Dig, our friends at LAB and of course the Akult Disco crew. See ya Guys there (we'll be in the corner by the right speaker!) and don't forget to bring your dancing shoes!!!

Music: Kids (like belgian waffles...I like women)

Photobucket
Ok...Let me be completely honest with all of you. My ears are sore from listening to the new MGMT remix of "Kids". God knows I love Soulwax, but this time I was shocked in disappointment and to call the remix a "nite version" is just utterly ridiculous. I hope this never makes it as an official release because I know I'll probably buy it anyways, even if it is this awful. I mean, this is like a stab in the back. I just watched "part of the weekend never dies" and it made me love those two Belgian Brothers even more, but this, this just breaks my heart. On paper one could say this is probably the remix of the year, but when the sound of it is so clique' one would hope it never happened. I guess I'm just becoming bitter, but everyday that passes, that sweet electro sound no longer does it for me. Electro...is this the end? Are we not lovers anymore? Have you ran out of ideas and beats? Were you just a fling like Electroclash was? Where did we go wrong? I know... It was all those American Apparel Hipsters. Maybe it's no one's fault...maybe it's just time to move on. I just hope this is not our last kiss.

Video: Mind Control (Party people....)

Rumor has it the Neptunes have dissolved their hit-making production partnership...and if that's the case, I'm pretty sure I'll barely make a difference on anything Pharrell is involved with. What is important to point out, is how he seems to be channeling every genre of music from every time period that mattered. Here in yet another collaboration with Common, is a beat so sick I'd make Afrika Bambaataa proud. "Party People...let's just funky"....to this new mind control.

Music: Runaway...Live @ Akult

It's perhaps not a secret that Runaway are DFA's newest prodigal children. In anticipation to the Vinyl release of their "Brooklyn Jam", Jacques Renault and Marcos Cabral have been busy bringing joy and disco nostalgia to New Yorkers for the past 5 years making them NYC's finest DJ's (according to the readers of paper magazine). And although that might not mean much to most mean spirited Boston Cousins, well that speaks volumes to us anyway. We were lucky enough to have them at Akult earlier this year and now it's time for them to come back and finish what they started. So anticipation to what will certainly become THE party of the FALL (October 18th@Goodlife), here's a little something they left last time they strolled through town....Can you Dig it!!!???

Lazy Sunday: A first Choice is always the best!

Well, it's no surprise that here at Manifest Destitute a Lazy Sunday is always regarded with ease. As of tradition, we are here to spank you with yet another classic to get your Sunday going or just complement your lovely day and that's really what's important. First Choice's classic "Let No Man Put Asunder" has been a staple in every "House"hold for as long as i can remember. Whether it was the Shep Pettibone or the Frankie Knuckles Remix, this tracks seems to have more lives than a Kitty Cat. But how can one deny it's importance as it single handedly became the source to so many early Chicago house tracks. How can one forget when Steve "Silk" Hurley used that bass line in his 1987 song "Jack Your Body" - and then went on to become the first house record to top the UK charts. Magic of Music?....most certainly.

And here we are 30 years later with yet another edit. This time thanks to our Pal and Disco Boss Mr. Brenden Wesley. The track came with a warning about the edit not being finished and blah blah blah...But seriously, sometimes a perfectionist needs to take a break...and just enjoy a Lazy Sunday. Can you do that Brenden?

Music: Set 2 Rock 2 the Beat...of the 90's!!!

Although I'm not too sure why the 90's are back in vogue, at least in terms of the music we love, it's been a great thing. Just in the past years we saw the return of the Miami Bass sound as an extension of the B-more craze and the explosion of a weird hybrid in urban music with elements of Hip-House/electro/acid/rave filtering into mainstream (dress-code) Clubs. DFA records over conceptualized early Chicago House and Techno is going through a massive renaissance with all its variations on the genre. Even just in Boston the Music scene experienced a sort of summer of love with more electronic music nights than I'd ever seen since I moved here in 2000. Point I'm trying to make is that reviving the past has never sounded so good. When it comes to remixes of classic tracks I'm usually the first one to turn my shoulder on them (because who really wants to listen to something being butchered by an untalented Deep House DJ).

Sometimes however there are tracks that keep the same energy of the original and turn into something that resembles more of a Disco edit than a remix. Well...this has been at least my experience with the remix of Kevin Saunderson's 1988 Classic "Rock 2 the Beat"...I mean you know Laurent Garnier probably listens to that song like everyday of his life. And although it's hard to make a classic better, I'm actually embarrassed to say I really like this Christian Smith And John Selway Remix. For some reason it might be the faster BPM or the reworking of the drum patterns that makes it relevant again. Perhaps is just nolstalgia, and just perhaps this is the essence of Techno. Considering that Kevin Saunderson is remixing stuff like the Presets or Hercules & Love Affair, it's good to see a legend be given a proper remix. I'm not a fan of Selway's stuff all together but this reworking is so damn good I might just have to send him a Christmas card....or like top friend on myspace or something.

Music/Film: Part of the Weekend Never Dies (The Review)

It's been probably way too long since we last wrote on the blog and frankly it was a necessary break. I'm not gonna bore you with sentimentalism/spirituality/reality checks (although just checks would be nice $$$) or anything remotely personal and introspective (cause I'm the worst at it). But after all, Manifest Destitute is a world for those who dream and those who Dance...and those who live each weekend like it was their last.

If you haven't seen Soulwax's "Part of the Weekend never dies" then you probably don't love Music all that much. If you haven't the faintest idea of What Soulwax or what 2 Many DJ's do/are, this nice little package will without a doubt indoctrinate you into the Gospel that is Nite Versions while making you believe Jesus is actually two brothers from Belgium whose goal is to save the world from bad music. Yeah ok...we really liked the documentary but trust me, we are pretty sure you will too.

"Director Saam Farahmand filmed Soulwax on their recent international dates, capturing all the excitement, chaos and humour of the world tour. Where the Beastie Boys filmed one gig with 50 cameras, Soulwax filmed 120 shows with one camera, in Europe, Japan, US, Latin America and Australia. The result is a snapshot of life on the road with one of the most exciting live bands in the world, and features their friends including 2manydj's, James Murphy & Nancy Whang (LCD Soundsystem), Erol Alkan, Tiga, Justice, Busy P, So-Me, Peaches, Klaxons and many more in interview, as well as behind-the-scenes footage, and LOTS of music".... go watch it (seriously, now!!!)
