Lazy Sunday: San Salavdor!!!

The Concacaf World Cup qualifying games have started and although I would never wish for El Salvador to beat my dearest Seleccion Azteca, their Capital does share the name of one of the greatest Disco tracks of all time. Azoto's San Salvador borders that 90% of Disco tunes that suck, but like many of my peers would agree, we understand the value of the song for what it is, a dope track. The percussions are always on point and that bass solo is one of the bests of all time...Not to mention the piano which predates House music but somehow always feels like it could fit in any Bob Sinclair set. Although this track is quite Latin in vibe, it was created by Italian producer Celso Valli, also responsible for Macho as well as some other memorable and forgettable Disco groups. San Salvador however is a landmark in Disco and if you don't agree, then you should probably stick to the mickey mouse club.

Bottin's Single "No static" is out now and here's the video to go along with it...I'm not sure what's up with the Futuristic Bikers riding through Piazza Navona, and call me crazy but last time I was in Rome those flashing high-rise building were not exactly there. Here's also another mix he nicely entitled: Space Lovers Come on Sunday (Lazy Sunday Mix)...Seriously, with a tittle like that, you'd think he'd read this blog. Lazy Sunday: On a Tuesday...

Well...What can I say about posting Lazy Sunday on a Tuesday? Being busy doesn't quite cut it...but to be honest this weekend was quite an interesting one. After partying it up at Rise this Saturday, I realized how powerful a Dance floor can be...and also how devastating. My girlfriend's got the bruises to prove it and i think i may have lost a pound from dancing that night. It's obviously an exaggeration to compare Rise to certain legendary dance clubs, but for a guy like me whose clubbing experience is partially eurotrash and partially Hip Hop Hipster galore, my night at Rise was as close as I can even perceive a night at the Paradise Garage would have been like. Exagerations? Perhaps, but that "Menergy" is exactly what lead to what i did yesterday (on Lazy Sunday)...I WENT RECORD SHOPPING. Granted I didn't make it to the LAB in NYC like i planned to, but we did go explore some of Boston's last standing oasis' for vinyl purists (as our friend Eric B likes to say). Looney Tunes might have over-prized grooves, but it's always a guarantee you'll find something in excellent conditions and something rare to take home. After browsing around for an hour (at least), we went home with some pretty good vinyl. Monday...we did it again, across the river in Cambridge. We spent way too much time at Cheapo, but patience always pays because this is what we found:

Monday:

1. Patrick Cowley - Menergy ft. Sylvester
2. Patrick Cowley - Do Ya Wanna Funk ft. Sylvester (with the instrumental: WOW!)
3. Jimmy "Bo" Horne - Spank (because you always should have 2 copies!!!)
4. S- Express - Theme From S-Express (early UK acid house in near Mint condition!!!)
5. The Cut - Kindness for Weakness (w/ Larry Levan mix!!!)
6. Destination - Move on up (cover of the Curtis Mayfield classic in Mint!)

Sunday:

1. Boney M. - Love For Sale (Because I couldn't get the C.O.M.B.I. edit)
2. Indeep - The Record Keeps Spinning (12", Promo)
3. Steve Arrington - Summertime Lovin' (Larry Levan Mix)

Lazy Sunday: There but for the grace of God go I

Growing up can be a bitch and sometimes I wonder about how I want to raise my own kids someday. However for some reason I am still grateful that I was raised in the City and not in suburbia. I'm sure it's lovely to have a backyard and a fence, but it's never been a life to commit to. Either way I don't wanna bum anyone out specially on a Lazy Sunday like today so let's focus on the Music...for the grace of God (hehe).

In 1979 Machine released an album with “There But For The Grace of God Go I”, one of the most misunderstood records of all time. Machine was basically a studio disco group put together by legendary producer August Darnell, a founding member of both Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band and Kid Creole And The Coconuts. This single, is probably one of the most remembered tracks by Machine, and one of Darnell's best productions. Although a track with an incredible thumping disco beat, this record caused all kinds of controversy when it came out, but if you follow the lyrics and listen to what the band is saying, it’s more of a criticism of existing intolerance than anything else.

Besides...now 30 years after the release of this track, We got Big O in the presidency!!! It's time to kick intolerance in the nuts and go marry a Mexican or somethin'.

Machine - The But For The Grace of God Go I

The lyrics for those who can't help but sing along...

Carlos and Carmen Vidal just had a child
A lovely girl with a crooked smile
Now they gotta split 'cause the Bronx ain't fit
For a kid to grow up in
Let's find a place they say, somewhere far away
With no blacks, no Jews and no gays

Chorus:
There but for the grace of God go I

Poppy and the family left the dirty streets
To find a quiet place overseas
And year after year the kid has to hear
The do's the don'ts and the dears
And when she's ten years old she digs that rock 'n' roll
But Poppy bans it from home

Chorus

Baby, she turns out to be a natural freak
Popping pills and smoking weed
(this lyric was changed to: "Gaining weight and losing sleep")
And when she's sweet sixteen she packs her things and leaves
With a man she met on the street
Carmen starts to bawl, bangs her head to the wall
Too much love is worse than none at all

Chorus

Alternative Version by Darnell as Kid Creole and the Coconuts.

Music: Sometimes I dream of C.O.M.B.I...and it's Lazy Sunday all over again!!!

Ok...I really like my girlfriend (she's awesome) but she's probably gonna be furious when she finds out all I've been thinking about this week is a super rare Disco Edit released by Japanese label C.O.M.B.I....The track "Mabakes" out of their newest 12" haunts me at night. I realize it's just an instrumental version of Boney M's "Ma Baker" but i feel like my life is incomplete without it. The saddest part about this story of obsession is the fact that I was so close to purchasing it from our favorite records store in NYC (turntable lab for those who don't read this blog)....but if I buy one thing I usually buy 10 more and then who's gonna pay my rent...Well, I've been searching the web for days and the record happens to be sold out almost everywhere. I even contacted a friend in Japan and no luck...only 6 shops in Tokyo actually carry the C.O.M.B.I releases. So what's so special about these records you may ask? Well, I couldn't really tell you in words. But if it means anything, the edits were done by Eric Duncan of Rub 'n Tug fame and hand delivered to the Lab personally (or so the story goes).
Anyways, After stalking these japanese dudes on their blog...all i can conclude is that they are the Meanest Cats (see the Ma Baker reference?) in the Disco Edit game. Riding around in their fixed gear bikes...hand delivering their records and t-shirts, they remind us of our friends over at Open Bicycle....but I digress.
Bottom line....I can't even find the MP3 on any blog so for now just enjoy the track straight out of their My Space page. So If anyone out there has this edit, Please share it with us...cause the chances of this record getting pressed again are as rare as Bill Clinton being president for the 3rd time...I think I'm gonna go cry now (and then I'll go online and look again). I need this in my ipod wicked bad...Wah!!!

ps: I don't even wanna mention their previous releases because my heart will start hurting...they are that good. But since we are that awesome we'll share this one with you that we found on the 20 funk jazz greats blog.

C.O.M.B.I. - It's a late (from Edits Vol.II)

AND NOW SOME LAZY SUNDAY ON A FRIDAY??? WTF IS THIS ABOUT? SIMPLE...IT'S ABOUT "MA BAKER"...ya Dig?

Way back in 1974 West German record producer Frank Farian recorded an album under the Boney M moniker and found himself needing a group to perform during tv appearences. The group danced and pranced around lip-synching the hell out of the tracks. Eventually I believe the group began singing the songs produced by Farian, at least in the studio. Boney M went on to become one of the most succesful acts out of Germany during the Disco Era with hits such as "Ma Baker", "Daddy Cool", "Belfast", "Rasputin" and the really successful "Rivers of Babylon". Fun Fact, Frank Farian also produced Milli Vanilli. (....and you know the rest of the story)

She was the meanest cat/In old chicago town/She was the meanest cat/She really moved them down/She had no heart at all/No no no heart at all
Love the Dance!!!

Lazy Sunday: mmm...So Spanked!!!

Lazy Sunday: Do it any way you Wanna!!!

Wow...it's Sunday before Turkey Week and what better way to start the day than by giving you the "People's Choice" to "Do it any way you Wanna". Puns apart, the 1975 Hit has one of those Bass Lines so effectively sampled and so effectively groovalicious it makes me wanna romp. Oh, and now that Barack is president...Let's Boogie Down U.S.A.

People's Choice - Do it any way you Wanna

I've never been an advocate of Colombia's finest but I can definitely advocate listening to Dillinger's Classic "Cocaine in my Brain" Hear that Bass? Go figure.

Dillinger - Cocaine in my Brain

And just when you think it couldn't get better...Bam!!! Jungle Brothers to take this full circle!!! "Feel the vibe surrounding me - Feel the bass come down on me - Shake your butt but don't break your back - Tap your feet and let your fingers snap"...Can you dig it?

Jungle Brothers - What U Waiting 4

Lazy Sunday: I need you now!!!

Sinnamon was probably better known for tracks like "He's gonna take you home" or "Thank you"
which spent two weeks at #1 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart back in '82. But the real jam for me has always been "I Need You Now". Listening to this track always makes me feel funny because of the lyrics but the instrumentation is pretty much on point. Sometimes I wonder if all DFA Artist go through Disco Boot camp because this sounds a lot like Holy Ghost's "Hold on" (Call me crazy but the Synth lines are very familar).

Lazy Sunday: I love you Dancer!!! (AKA Prancy Dan-Cuh)

Yes, Here at Manifest Destitute, Dancers are always appreciated, and Voyage's Disco classic "I love you Dancer" is our tune for the day. The European Group was probably better known for other singles like "souvenirs" or "from east to west" but I love you Dancer is by far our favorite. So if you know any Dancers, give them a call or a hug...sometimes they want to be loved too.

Lazy Sunday: I like What You're Doing To Me (Babee)

I could say so much about this track...and will somehow include it in my wedding bows (seriously!!!) but for now let's just enjoy the fact that it's Lazy Sunday and "I like What You're Doing To Me". This Disco Gem courtesy of Young and Company has so much groove It's hard not to fall in love with it. Can you feel the love? We did.

Lazy Sunday: Guns at Brooklyn?

Lazy Sunday is back y'all. After a brief hiatus, it was time to come back to Boston and do what we do best...being Lazy. Recently, we've been sharing some embarrassing house hits from the 90's and well...as much as we loved them, I wanted to find an excuse to share with you Santogold's "Guns at Brooklyn" from the Diplo produced Mixtape. Staying pretty faithful to the original, this track is pure joy and yes...90% Dub fire. But let's not forget The Clash though. A classic is a classic...and after all that's why here on Lazy Sunday you'll always find a classic.

Lazy Sunday: Just kidding...

Lazy Sunday: is Moloko "Milk" in Russian?

Although for some years now the beautiful Roisin Murphy has been enjoying fame as a solo artist, I still look with nostalgia at the years when she was the vocalist for Moloko. A band that never took itself too seriously, Moloko always seemed to have fun along the way. It's been about 10 years since "Sing it back" came out to dominate dance charts, thanks in part to the best remix Boris Dlugosch has ever done. While we wait for the next Moloko album, here's two classic tracks to remember them by.

top-five of the UK singles chart in 1999. went on to be in 110 music compilations.

"Ibiza" at it's finest.

Lazy Sunday: Armand Van Helden - you don't know me

Classic Track from the late nineties that was a huge commercial success for Mr. Van Helden at a time when it was ok to dress like Ali G....Respect. To be honest, he dresses like whatever is the latest fashion in Hip Hop....I think right now it's neon skinny jeans and shutter shades. Say what you want, the man really knows hwo to embrace a trend. I mean...even after 911 he had turntables from Pakistan, and you really can't fuck wit that.

ps: I dress like that too (...Jesus I'm such a poser!)

Lazy Sunday: A Guy Called Gerald - Voodoo Ray

It was the year 1988. Yes...that famous second summer of love. The track was Gerald's Voodoo Ray. The rest was history.

Lazy Sunday: Crystal Waters - Gypsy Woman

Oh yes...it's Sunday Lazy Sunday. No worries though, Hope this classic video can bright up your Sunday just a little! (granted the lyrics are not uplifting but the keys in this track are as good as it gets in house)

ps: Doesn't the lady with the mask look like the Cover of Sebastian's last 12" on Ed Banger. Coincidence...I think not! Good Job SOME!
