Music: Old School Reunion needs to get signed!

Photobucket
Unlike your High School Reunions and their awkward conversations, UK's own "Old School Reunion" deliver some music worthy of those famous French Robots. "Love Story" In particular stands as something that should have been already been signed to Kitsune a while ago. Perhaps it will be just a matter of time...till then, I hope the tracks keep coming by. "Old School Reunion" are definitely one of the best things we've heard recently (and as you know, we listen to a lot of shit on a daily basis). If you're considering going to your old school reunion, well don't bother...just stay home and listen to this instead. Seriously, would you rather go see Haylee and Brett? I didn't think so...

Lazy Sunday: Boom Boom Boom it's The Outhere Brothers!

Yes, It's Sunday and time to decompress from a weekend of Partying. Well...no, I say get back on the horse and boom boom boom like the Outhere Brothers did back in '94! For those who don't remember this duo from Chicago, well they pretty much walked a fine line between dirty and raunchy. Say what you want about them, but these two somehow managed to become the third act in U.K. history to score back-to-back chart-toppers. I know...it sounds like the plot of a good Will Ferrel movie (but maybe not). Now that all the hipsters are into B-more, Miami Bass, and ghetto tech, it was time someone would recognize the contributions of The Outhere Brothers. I know they are probably not as prolific as DJ Assault and DJ Funk...but then again no one is. In any case, Let's welcome the Brothers to the Manifest Destitute Hall of Shame! (and trust me...this is a pretty good award.) For y'all who are rolling your eyes right now...stop taking yourselves so seriously, this is not pitchfork! o_O

Boom Boom Boom, now let me hear you say wayoh! (wayoh)

This video is like a cross between Rick James, Duran Duran's Girls on Film and Stripes with Bill Murray...huh?!

Yet another hit single...talk about having fun!

Anthem of Euro'96...yes Only Brits can relate to this.

Blame Italy for this one! that's the last time I'm having a party in my refrigerator...

Music: MtO says Bring it On Bitches!!!

Our Friends over at Low Life Inc. just sent us some tracks by Cocomachete's newest artist MtO. Hailing from the land of Good wine & spreadable cheese (AKA France), MtO's electro/ hip-hop grooves finally get a proper release this side of the pond after his first record was put up by Roxour back in 2006. His new single "Bring it On" is out now via cocomachete on Beatport with remixes by Paris' Remote (from Ivan Smagghe's Kill The DJ imprint), and Montreal's own Hatchmatik of the infamous Peer Pressure Crew.

Music: Hercules & Love Affair Remixes are Divine!

In addition to being the mastermind of the Hercules & Love Affair project, Andy Buttler is a pretty amazing remixer. We recently got a hold of his remix for "Situation" from legendary 80's band Yazoo. The remix basically takes the new wave out and injects it with some jackin' house steroids to make this the Barry Bonds of remixes. The result is unbelievable... This is probably not the first house remix of Situation, but how can you say no to this one? This one is for the hall of fame unlike the Giants Juicer.

Yazoo - Situtation (Hercules & Love Affair Remix) Buy it Here!!!

The second remix we got for you is a little bit more on the Cosmic Disco side of things but definitely something our friends at the Akult Discotheque would appreciate. This remix of Baby Talk's "Chance" is pretty outstanding as you can hear all the production values that DFA is notorious for...

Baby Talk - Chance
(Hercules & Love Affair Remix) Buy it Here!!!

Ultimately the third remix is my favorite. Aeroplane's "Whispers" is more straight forward, but I love the vocals by Kathy Diamond and that repeating "never again" chorus that sounds like he couldn't program his sampler so he just sung it. Sounds a little like gibberish but i love it!

Aeroplane - Whispers
(Hercules & Love Affair Remix) Buy it Here!!!

So there you have it...the living proof that Hercules & Love Affair are the hottest thing on earth and DFA probably the most trusted label out there.

Live Music: Dizzee Rascal @ Webster Hall, NYC

Our friends over at Baeblemusic just sent us a reminder about the Electrifying performance Dizzee Rascal gave our New York cousins last month. Playing to a sold out crowd of Hip Hop and street wear connoisseurs, the Rascal went through his most recent "Maths & English" material. Make sure you Check out "Old Skool"... cause that's Hip Hop at its finest!!! and "Where's the G's" cause that's a classic in the making. Here's his performance of "Flex", but If you wanna catch the whole performance then head over to Baeblemusic.

ps: I had not idea
AARON LACRATE was Dizzee's DJ... and that's fuckin' ace!

Music: Feeling Electricity!

So after all the hype that's been going on for months, I finally sat down an listened to the whole MGMT album. A mixture of Psychedelic riffs and borderline folk tracks, the only tracks that stood out for us were "electric feel" and "time to pretend". Not surprisingly, these tracks were chosen as singles, but I kinda wish their album was more oriented towards the sound of these two. Then again I'm sure the other songs appeal more to an Indie rock crowd. I've been playing "electric feel" pretty much non-stop for the past month and now that Justice did a remix for it, it kinda made sense to post about it. Thanks to Asian "The Man" Dan, we got our hands on the remix, which by the way sounds not to much different, except for the tweaked out vocals and the re-instrumentation. Ironically the first time I heard "Electric feel" it kinda reminded of recent production by Cassius. Now it's the nouveau French Duo par excellence to provide remix duties. Match made in heaven?....possibly.

People: Jimmy from Concepts

This was actually posted on Frank the Butcher's blog at SlamxHype, but it was too damn funny so we are gonna share it with you here. For those who don't know Jimmy Fitz, he's the assistant manager of one of the illest sneaker shops in Boston, although technically Concepts is in Cambridge. You might also catch Jimmy Ridin' his Fixie up and down Mass. Ave sporting a supreme hat or one of the thousand fitteds he owns. Fitz has always been friendly with us, but you best not give him a funny look. Trust me, you don't wanna mess with a Kung Fu master...

ps: "Concepts Knows too"!!!

Music: Come si Dice Crookers in Italiano?

Photobucket
I know we've been posting a lot of music from the Milanese Duo (who by the way are also huge sneakerheads) but how can you not, when their remixes are attached to every big name in Dance right now. With the poignant sounds of rave and the griminess of B-more, the Hip Hop Loving Duo is making a big impact on the scene playing some of the loudest house music out there. Now making their coronation official, the Crookers played the BBC 1's Essential Mix last weekend which as you know is a pretty much every DJ's dream gig. The tracklist has some pretty impressive names so make sure you play this loud and with the bass all the way to the right! Enjoy... o_O

Lazy Sunday: Reel 2 Real - I like to move it

Ah...where did my youth go?!!! I remember when this came out like it was yesterday. To this day people don't give this song enough credit, but I guarantee you there were aways smiles and girls shaking their booty when the DJ played this. I know Mr. Morillo is a superstar DJ and has been for years but this for me is his legacy... "I like to move it" is a track so infectious it's like the macarena of house music!!! No joke...When i was 12, I bought the CD single in Amsterdam along with 2 Unlimited's "Let the beat control your body" and Moby's "Go". At that point everyone was still listening to Guns & Roses....but in retrospect, I guess I've just always been a slave to the Rhythm.

THE ONLY REASON why I wasted an afternoon watching Madagascar!

Indications of a dance music addict: At the Age of 12 child spends 2 hours at tower records.

Lazy Sunday: Just kidding...

but seriously, this is truly inspirational. I guarantee you Mel Gibson saw this on TV the night before they filmed that final battle scene for Braveheart. Mel...When are we gonna film the next Lethal Weapon? I need my fix for explosive toilets! o_O

Event: Summer Solstice w/ Brenden Wesley & Alan Manzi

Come celebrate the first day of Summer at the official Make Music Cambridge After-Party w/ DJs Brenden Wesley (Akult) & Alan Manzi (Make It New). The Celebration will go on from 10pm till 2am @ the Om Lounge, on 92 Winthrop St. Cambridge, MA (in Harvard Square).

Video: Hearcules & Love Affair - You Belong

Yes... Hercules & Love Affair come back with their third single July 7th and like we predicted it months ago, "You Belong" had to be a strong contender to follow "blind". With Remixes by Riton, and House Legend Kevin Sanderson, this new single is probably our favorite release from them. I know people keep mentioning them as a "Disco Revolution" but really all they did was pay homage to the great dance music that came before them... and don't get me wrong, they are the best at it right now. It's no wonder they already had Frankie Knuckles remix a track for them and to have Kevin Sanderson do another just seems like the logical progression. While we wait for the single to come out on vinyl and cd (or digitally for y'all serato fans) here's the video...and if you haven't bought the Album yet, go do that today...you're missing out on a little piece of history.

Music: Moby is guetting his street cred back.

Ok....this is gonna be a quick post cause i go to run downtown to watch the Celtics Parade!!! NBA Champions baby!!! Anyhow....Let's review Moby's career (in 3 seconds)

Moby in the 90's = RAVE Maestro!!!
Moby in the late 90's/early 00's = $ELL OUT! (but good for him and people who bought their CD at starbucks)
MOBY in '08 = DANCE MUSIC AFICIONADO with street Cred mothafuckas!!!

His new album was not appreciated by the music snobs over there, but here at Manifest Destitute Moby is always welcomed. His new single "I love to move in Here" is the Kind of Old Skool Hip-House revival track that makes you smile not because it's great but because it reminds you of the good ol' days when people where having fun dancing to the cheesiest of music (in bright ass apparel and people still said the word "DeFest" to describe something "ill"). Well...Moby is probably one of the greatest Connoisseurs of Dance Music today and his unique skill to spot good remixers is better now than ever. It probably has to do with the fact he's back to DJing in Brooklyn and hanging out with girls 20 years younger...(cheeky bastard!!!) Music: Drop the Lime's Alice is good (and current), Crookers remix of "I love to move in Here" is great booty shaking glory but Holy Ghosts remix of the same song just Hit it off the ball park for me. Disco greatness at its best. See pitchfork, Moby can do no wrong. o_O

Sports: NBA Champions Baby!!!

Finally!!! 22 years after Larry Bird led the Celtics to glory, Boston gets a chance to celebrate again. The Celtics took the Championship over the Lakers with a victory that screamed like humiliation. With a final score of 131-92, Pierce and the boys captured the NBA Championship in record fashion. "Boston's 39-point win is the most lopsided close-out triumph in Finals history, eclipsing the mark it set in 1965 also against the Lakers. Ray Allen also hit seven treys to set a new mark for most 3-pointers in a Finals series (22) and the Celtics' 18 steals were the most in a Finals contest".

Although we watched the Game at home, there was no way we would miss the celebration! So we got on the car and drove downtown to join our friends at the TAM to celebrate this well deserved victory. The photos and video should speak for themselves!!! THANK YOU CELTICS FOR SUCH A WONDERFUL SEASON!!!

Music: Kid Cudi (in space!)

The Ohio rapper has been creating quite a buzz around himself for the past year. After appearing on a couple of Campaigns in streetwear (10 Deep and Lemar and Dauley) and signing to Fool's Gold, Kid Cudi has been getting a lot of radio play in Europe with his song "Day 'N' Night". For now in America, it hasn't been the same, but chances are we'll be hearing more of this kid soon. For now get the 12" single here!

Lazy Sunday: Black Box - Ride on Time (to beat LA!)

It's Sunday and this time it's yet another classic. Although Italy is famous for bringing us Italo Disco in the late 70's and early 80's, it really was the 90's that propelled Italian Dance music to the mainstream. "Spaghetti House" was actually my introduction to house music as a whole and BlackBox's "Ride on Time" was always "the track" at my school parties. Yup...that and Culture Beat's "Mr. Vain".

"Ride On Time" however was a hell of a track and part of it was because it sampled Loleatta Hollaway's "Love Sensation". Although the Italians cleared the sample with Salsoul Records, Girlfriend didn't get a dime so she took the matter to her own hands and won a pretty sweet settlement. The track went on to spend 6 weeks at number one in the UK Dance charts and became Blackbox's most successful single....probably because they couldn't pronounce their T's!!! LOL.

Ah....these past couple days I've been reminiscing a lot of my childhood in Italy in part because my friend Vale was visiting Boston, but also because the best Dance radio show in Italy is back in the air after some years of hiatus. Go check the "Deejay Time" show here to see what I mean! (it's quite cheesy but then again it is Italy...)

Ps: Vale....if you're reading this, grazie per il vino che ti sei dimenticata sul frigo! Domani me lo bevo a cena... o_O"

Ps#2: And tonight... BEAT LA!!! BEAT LA!!! BEAT LA!!!

"Ride on Time" is "Right on Time"!!!

Music/Fashion: Busy P is a sneakerhead too.

Busy P, the Influential head honcho of Ed Banger Records and (ex manager for Daft Punk) was recently rewarded by Nike with a limited edition Air Force One. The Sneakers are to be available only at Colette and they'll retail for about €200 euro. Designed in collaboration with the Ed Banger's art director soME, the shoe is a playful battle of words between Busy P and SoMe about the design of the shoe. Part of the "influencer pack" it is unlikely we'll see the shoe in America although who knows, it might just come out on selected tier zero accounts.

As a way to promote the shoe release, french blog La MJC did a photo shoot reminiscent of the famous Andy Warhol vs. Jean-Michel Basquiat photos by Michael Halsband. Pairing Busy P to Senegalese-French Rapper Elie “Booba” Yaffa the campaign focuses on the influences the two have brought have had in their city of Paris. In any case....Nike blah blah blah. The real reason for this post was to give you guys this ridiculous remix by Crookers of Busy P's "to protect and entertain".

Music: Orgasmic's Cuizinier Pour les Filles Vol.3

There really isn't much that hasn't been said about Orgasmic (who looks like a French Ice T) and his role as the Beat maker in TTC and Mixtape maestro for the Institubes Label. Now on his third installment, Orgasmic's Cuizinier is hotter than ever with guest spots by Spank Rock, Pase Rock, Marina (formerly of Bonde Do Role), Teki Latex, TTC, Omnikrom, and the So Fresh Squad. If you like French Hip Hop, Baile Funk, French Electro and that Hipster Hip-House sound via Baltimore, then expect this to be "orgasmique" (hehe). Although all the tracks are pretty good, we liked C’est Pour Mieux Gagner the best...how can you go wrong with filtered disco and hood lyrics? Word of advice to young hipsters out there...If you wanted to buy Steve Aoki's Pillow face, don't bother. Save a couple of bucks and buy this here.

Lazy Sunday: This Heat will House You!!!

The Jungle Brother's are probably one of the most underrated if not forgotten acts in Hip Hop. Although they were members of the Native Tongue Posse which included De la Soul and A Tribe Called Quest, their career never took off like theirs. Here at the Manifest Destitute Hall of fame though, we'll always remember them for their collaboration with Todd Terry in "I'll House you" as one of the most important dance records of all time. If you don't think this song is all that then think again...cause even Mr. Sean "Diddy" Combs did a cover of it a couple of years back when he was toying at a career in electronic music. So enjoy the track, we've been playing it for years and we still can't get enough of it...

Jungle Brothers - I'll House you

Music: Wiley Grimey & Dizzee Like Weezy

It was only time before Grime invaded our Dancefloors and surprisingly, it took way longer than expected. Recently we've seen Dizzee Razcal pair up with Bun B with a track that pushes the boundaries of Hip Hop without even trying. Similarly, Wiley's "Wearing my rolex transforms itself into THE Dancefloor banger in every DJ's set regardless of the genre. In the UK, Grime has been at the forefront of electronic music and Hip Hop, partly because of the popularity of Two Step and Drum&Bass in the late nineties. Now with the rise of Dubstep and the nostalgia for the heavy "rave style" synth bass, Urban music has a new palette to work from as you can see in the sets of DJ's such as Herve & Sinden. With all genres of music cross-pollinating back and forth, it is plausible we'll be listening to electro-rock-trance-hall pretty soon. Who knows, maybe we'll actually like it.

Dizzee Rascal - Where's the G's
Wiley - Wearing my Rolex
Hot Chip - Wearing my Rolex (Cover)

Just to show how a setting can make or break a video...this was flawless.

I always had a thing for foxes...

Event: How some Lobster Dunks Invaded Harvard Square!!!

Photo: Hypebeast
As you know, Saturday May 31st was a huge day for Sneakerheads in the Boston Area. With the release of the Concepts Lobster Dunk, Harvard Square was invaded by over 300 passionate people hoping to get their hands on the Nike Dunk that our friend Rob Heppler and Concepts designed a little more than year ago. The "Camp Out" began on Wednesday@10pm when 5 Brooklyn kids parked their foldout chairs outside the store on 37 Brattle Street. By Thursday night, the line had grown around the block making of this an unprecedented event in Boston. When we saw the line that night the chances of getting a pair started to fade faster than Donald trump's hair.

Photo: Hinagiku
On Friday afternoon when we finally got a chance to make it to Harvard, we became the 130th person in line. For a couple of minutes we started feeling self-conscious about about being the last on line, but knowing that the person in front of me flew in from Chicago made me realize the wait was gonna be worth it. A couple of hours went by and Catie was kind enough to Bring us Pizza and some cold ones. Throughout the night people stopped by wondering what we were waiting for, but by the end of the night they began to get answers ranging from Jenna Jameson's book signing to tickets for the Sex & the City premiere (which also happened to be down the street)
.

Photo: Dreamsrey
I do admit that camping out for sneakers might seem ridiculous to some, but seeing the determination that these kids had, to camp out for days, actually deserves a lot of credit. As one camper said to an older "highly educated" woman questioning our actions: "Lady, At least I'm not smoking crack or stealing your car!" Needless to say, Harvard Square began over analyzing us like an anthropological experiment.

Photo: Tina L.
The atmosphere however was friendly, some people brought us Candy, some of the other businesses brought us water and energy drinks. By the end of the night the Corner of Brattle Street and Church Street had become a full-on Block Party. In between cars people threw around footballs and shared stories varying from Basketball Stats to inappropriate Youtube videos. Friendships were formed through this experience and people bonded not only for their love of sneakers but because the last 12 hours were a hell of long time.

Photo: Tina L.
When the morning came back on Saturday, euphoria kept everyone going. The lobster truck showed up early giving people a taste of what was to come. Lobster rolls and Clam chowder were served to us while on line by the staff at concepts making this experience even more special. For those of us who were lucky to get a ticket the night before, waiting just became a celebration. For those who decided to sleep on their own beds, he tension grew as the line began moving. By the time the doors at concepts finally opened, 300 people stood in single file awaiting the moment and cheering for the Brooklyn kids when they came out holding the boxes like a heavy weight championship belt.

Photo: Tina L.
Our friends at Concepts did an amazing job not only designing the packaging for the shoes, but really making sure this event went smooth and without problems. Special shout out here for all the staff at concepts, but in particular Jimmy, Deon, Cheddah, Frank, Natalie and Chris for making sure everyone was happy with what they got. Like it wasn't enough though, Graffiti Legends and Friends of Concepts, Stash and Futura joined the Celebration signing the limited edition (50 total) Wooden Boxes. A raffle put a nice end to the festivities with 37 limited posters and some Shirts given out to the lucky holders of the tickets. Again, Congratulations to Concepts for the Show they put up and Congratulations to all of those who waited patiently. We all got definitely something to remember here!

ps: with all the commotion going on in the Square, we didn't even open our package till we got home, and i gotta say, it was like Christmas over at Casa Manifest Destitute.

Video: Munk - Live Fast Die Old

About a month ago we posted some of the remixes from Munk's new single "Live Fast Die Old". The video is out now featuring the sexy Daria Argento. The new album "cloudbuster" should be out in June and featuring vocals from ASIA ARGENTO, Matty Safer (from THE RAPTURE) and German 70's movie icons KLAUS LEMKE and TELONIUS.

Lazy Sunday: Two Man Sound

The Belgian band Two Man Sound is best known for "Qué Tal America," their international underground disco anthem of 1979. The 12" story seems to be that this was first released on the Canadian Attic label in 1978 - a different version to the US version released the following year - which was also repressed in 1981. Possibly one of the best basslines of any disco track ever. There's no video for this so enjoy "Disco Samba" Instead...

ps: I got this stuff on Vinyl in case you were wondering.

I know Soulwax likes Disco but who knew it was actually a Belgian tradition.

Best Disco track EVER!!!
