Event: This Weekend @ Rise

Photobucket
The 10 year anniversary celebrations continue at RISE and this weekend there are some special guests that we all know too well...

Friday, January 30: PR Recordings presents Steve Porter & Friends

RISE-resident DJ/producer Steve Porter returns to the club where it all started for him. Before he matured into one of the State’s biggest dance music exports, with 70 singles to his credit and headlining gigs in the world’s best clubs, he was a local Boston DJ. In 1999, RISE-owner Tom Beaulieu was quick to recognize Porter’s talent, providing him with a home at the one club where he could develop the craft that would soon take him to six continents and back. He’s returned to help his home club celebrate ten years of world-class nightlife, with local support from Red Foxx and Eli Wilkie, two of today’s most recognizable names in the Boston dance music scene. Western Mass home turf homeys Chris Thorpe and Jon Winn will drop Deep Tech in the lounge all night.

Saturday, January 31st: Peter Rauhofer (NYC)

With a list of Remixes that reads like the Billboard's top 40, Peter Rauhofer is not only one of Madonna's favorite knob-tweakers but the recepient of a Grammy Award in 2000. As one of the bigger names in the Industry, Rauhofer popularity transcends outside the United States and gender lines. He is mostly known for his legendary residency at the Roxy in New York, and now is currently the resident DJ of the gay dance party called "Work." It's an honor to have him in town so get there early cause this one is gonna be packed.

...and Remember, anyone who emails mike@riseclub.us and mentions Manifest Destitute will receive reduced admission for themselves and their party this Friday.

Music: Radio like transmission caused by Hot Chips...

This is actually one for my Brother...who unfortunately I don't see much. I still remember when I introduced him to Joy Division and I can't really say but i think it changed his life like it changed mine. Anyways, before i get too sentimental, here's something that we found on the blogosphere. I feel everyone should check this out and go spend a few bucks for a good cause. War ain't a joke and it's usually children who suffer the most. And while music might not be the answer to stop conflict, it does have an incredible power to heal. Go do the right thing and support War Child! In the mean time, here's a sample of this incredible cover album with some of today's most critically acclaimed artists.

Music: Italians do it Better but Bottin does it the Best...

For a label that claims that Italians do it Better, it was time they actually had an Italian on the Roster. DJ and Producer William Bottin hails from Venice a city that well...overflows with water a lot. In any case Bottin is joining the ranks of Chromatics and Glass Candy on the Italo Label du Jour. If you are into the whole Balearic/Cosmic Disco scene, you probably recognize his name from his recent appearance on the Cosmic Balearic Beats Vol. 1 compilation out now on Eskimo. The 3 part Vinyl sits nicely on my shelf thanks to Newbury comics (although I think they've still got some copies left) and Bottin's "Fondamente Nove" is one of the best tracks I've heard recently...simple bass and a fantastic progression. I guess Italians really do it better. In any case, in anticipation for "No Static" to be released on IDIB, here's a taste of the song and a mix brilliantly selected by Bottin himself. Enjoy...I'm off to make some Pasta alle Vongole.

Bottin - Fondamente Nove (Eskimo) Buy Here!
Bottin - Disko Aesthethics Mix (Italians do it Better)

Tracklist:

01. Bottin: No Static (Italians Do It Better 2009) Buy Here!

03. Bottin & Kotey: Hot Ring (Deep Freeze 2009)
04. Amnésie: Turas (Proto 1983) email me and I'll send it to you!
05. Cheaps: Moliendo Café (Memory Records 1983)
06. Cat Pee: Pole (1982, Bottin's surgeon edit 2008)
07. Egotrya: Volcano (Synthonic, 2008)

Music: I got the Williams' Blood in me!!!

Yes...Grace Jones is coming back with an interesting album (Hurricane) but most importantly with a single that has gravitated on our playlists for some time now. Months ago I remember running into "Williams' Blood" with a Remix by Belgian duo Aeroplane. Although on the forefront of the Cosmic Disco wave, Aeroplane's mix was somehow rejected. After the track leaked online though and got play by some high profile DJs, The label (Wall of Sound) quickly changed their minds and let's face it...the track pretty much sells itself. Good to see Grace Jones back on Stage but even better with this little package. Williams' Blood out now on Wall Sound with remixes by Aeroplane, The Trixters, Greg Wilson and Ivor Guest.

Lazy Sunday: There but for the grace of God go I

Growing up can be a bitch and sometimes I wonder about how I want to raise my own kids someday. However for some reason I am still grateful that I was raised in the City and not in suburbia. I'm sure it's lovely to have a backyard and a fence, but it's never been a life to commit to. Either way I don't wanna bum anyone out specially on a Lazy Sunday like today so let's focus on the Music...for the grace of God (hehe).

In 1979 Machine released an album with “There But For The Grace of God Go I”, one of the most misunderstood records of all time. Machine was basically a studio disco group put together by legendary producer August Darnell, a founding member of both Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band and Kid Creole And The Coconuts. This single, is probably one of the most remembered tracks by Machine, and one of Darnell's best productions. Although a track with an incredible thumping disco beat, this record caused all kinds of controversy when it came out, but if you follow the lyrics and listen to what the band is saying, it’s more of a criticism of existing intolerance than anything else.

Besides...now 30 years after the release of this track, We got Big O in the presidency!!! It's time to kick intolerance in the nuts and go marry a Mexican or somethin'.

Machine - The But For The Grace of God Go I

The lyrics for those who can't help but sing along...

Carlos and Carmen Vidal just had a child
A lovely girl with a crooked smile
Now they gotta split 'cause the Bronx ain't fit
For a kid to grow up in
Let's find a place they say, somewhere far away
With no blacks, no Jews and no gays

Chorus:
There but for the grace of God go I

Poppy and the family left the dirty streets
To find a quiet place overseas
And year after year the kid has to hear
The do's the don'ts and the dears
And when she's ten years old she digs that rock 'n' roll
But Poppy bans it from home

Chorus

Baby, she turns out to be a natural freak
Popping pills and smoking weed
(this lyric was changed to: "Gaining weight and losing sleep")
And when she's sweet sixteen she packs her things and leaves
With a man she met on the street
Carmen starts to bawl, bangs her head to the wall
Too much love is worse than none at all

Chorus

Alternative Version by Darnell as Kid Creole and the Coconuts.

Music: Veronica's Veil causes fan death!!!

We haven't really said much about Fan Death even though we included them our top 13 of 2008. In fact, it really surprises me since their new single has been in full rotation in our ipods for a good 4 months. Like that wasn't enough, we just received the vinyl of "Veronica's Veil" on the mail thanks to Erol Alkan's online shop of limited edition goodies. But let's talk about this sexy duo that goes by Fan Death. Not only are these two girls like amazingly good looking (not that we care...yes we do) but the single has actually got all the elements that make this a "Nu" Disco anthem. God...I'm really getting sick of caling it nu disco but till someone cleverly renames the genre, we might have to stick to it.

Back to the Band: Fan Death take their name from an old South Korean urban legend where electric fans, if left running overnight in a closed room, can cause death by suffocation. Kinda morbid and a little hot. Also: Girls and religious iconography are so hot i'd might even consider watching the Da Vinci Code. I mean...I love Greek Mythology and all, but Christian mysticism is way hotter!!! And their single named after the Catholic relic (which, according to super Christians, belonged to Veronica from Jerusalem who bumped into Jesus on the way to the Calvary and wiped the sweat from his face, leaving his image printed on her veil) is quite hot too. Hot Music + Hot Girls = a good time (trust me on this one). Music wise, this one is Manifest Destitute Guaranteed!

In any case Veronica's veil is Out now on Phantasy Sounds (out of the UK) with a slick remix by Erol Alkan. Buy Here! or Here!

Event/Spot: One Decade of Dance @ RISE...Let's Celebrate!

It's no secret that Boston's Nightlife wouldn't be the same without Rise. When the lights are turned on at your local Bar, the lights and the music begin to blast at 306 Stuart Street. For a town where 2:15am usually means a Cab home, for the members of Rise it's just the continuation of a night to remember. To many the membership is not just an affiliation, but a family and a lifestyle...a place where Music always takes center stage. Annie Lennox once said: "Anyone and everyone has the capacity to respond to music. It's a gender-free, race-free, culture-free zone, reaching beyond those perceived divides. The power of music is a connective force."...This is exactly what Rise has always been about. Now on their 10th Anniversary, the Club welcomes 2009 with a calendar packed with globe-throttling DJs, and Boston's more recognizable talents. Let's start the Celebrations and see what they have in store this weekend...
Friday, Jaunary 16: Toolroom Knights residency kickoff with Martijn Ten Velden
Toolroom is a world-renown independent dance music label founded by DJ/producer Mark Knight, and based in the UK. They are lauded for releasing the chart-topping music that powers the world’s best nightclubs, including Knight's massive 2008 reworking of Laruent Garnier's classic, "The Man With The Red Face." This collaboration with RISE is among the imprints’ first efforts to expand their branding into the United States; it will bring to Boston some of the industry’s most highly regarded global electronic music artists. Netherland's Martijn Ten Velden kicks off the partnership, with an opening set by Boston’s Joe Bermudez, himself an award-winning DJ/producer with several Billboard top-10’s to his credit. Portsmouth, NH lives free with Marz Entertainment's Ryan Obermiller in the lounge.

Because we love you, anyone who emails mike@riseclub.us and mentions Manifest Destitute will receive reduced admission for themselves and their party. No need to stop the show if one can wait till the sun Rises. Check soon for more events...

Music: Sometimes I dream of C.O.M.B.I...and it's Lazy Sunday all over again!!!

Ok...I really like my girlfriend (she's awesome) but she's probably gonna be furious when she finds out all I've been thinking about this week is a super rare Disco Edit released by Japanese label C.O.M.B.I....The track "Mabakes" out of their newest 12" haunts me at night. I realize it's just an instrumental version of Boney M's "Ma Baker" but i feel like my life is incomplete without it. The saddest part about this story of obsession is the fact that I was so close to purchasing it from our favorite records store in NYC (turntable lab for those who don't read this blog)....but if I buy one thing I usually buy 10 more and then who's gonna pay my rent...Well, I've been searching the web for days and the record happens to be sold out almost everywhere. I even contacted a friend in Japan and no luck...only 6 shops in Tokyo actually carry the C.O.M.B.I releases. So what's so special about these records you may ask? Well, I couldn't really tell you in words. But if it means anything, the edits were done by Eric Duncan of Rub 'n Tug fame and hand delivered to the Lab personally (or so the story goes).
Anyways, After stalking these japanese dudes on their blog...all i can conclude is that they are the Meanest Cats (see the Ma Baker reference?) in the Disco Edit game. Riding around in their fixed gear bikes...hand delivering their records and t-shirts, they remind us of our friends over at Open Bicycle....but I digress.
Bottom line....I can't even find the MP3 on any blog so for now just enjoy the track straight out of their My Space page. So If anyone out there has this edit, Please share it with us...cause the chances of this record getting pressed again are as rare as Bill Clinton being president for the 3rd time...I think I'm gonna go cry now (and then I'll go online and look again). I need this in my ipod wicked bad...Wah!!!

ps: I don't even wanna mention their previous releases because my heart will start hurting...they are that good. But since we are that awesome we'll share this one with you that we found on the 20 funk jazz greats blog.

C.O.M.B.I. - It's a late (from Edits Vol.II)

AND NOW SOME LAZY SUNDAY ON A FRIDAY??? WTF IS THIS ABOUT? SIMPLE...IT'S ABOUT "MA BAKER"...ya Dig?

Way back in 1974 West German record producer Frank Farian recorded an album under the Boney M moniker and found himself needing a group to perform during tv appearences. The group danced and pranced around lip-synching the hell out of the tracks. Eventually I believe the group began singing the songs produced by Farian, at least in the studio. Boney M went on to become one of the most succesful acts out of Germany during the Disco Era with hits such as "Ma Baker", "Daddy Cool", "Belfast", "Rasputin" and the really successful "Rivers of Babylon". Fun Fact, Frank Farian also produced Milli Vanilli. (....and you know the rest of the story)

She was the meanest cat/In old chicago town/She was the meanest cat/She really moved them down/She had no heart at all/No no no heart at all

Music: Be my Crush!!!

Brazilian Duo The Twelves receive the Juan Maclean treatment with this remix of their "Be my Crush" Track. The only thing that confuses me is why Barcardi is becoming a record label...I though a shitty economy always increased the consumption of cheap Rum....Weird.

Video: Love Graffiti by Andre'

André from Arkitip, Inc. on Vimeo.

Music: Franz Ferdinand is Ulysses?

Sometimes we like to talk about literature sitting in the living room drinking Bordeaux but this isn't one of those times...and while we could elaborate on Joyce's and Virgil's Ulysses, we rather share with you Franz Ferdinand's. And please don't get us started about WWI and the Hapsburg family because we rather talk about Erol Alkan and the spectacular remix for the Scottish Band's new single. So let's put it this way...If James Joyce was Inspired by Virgil and Virgil talks about the Greeks...then this remix is a representation of what exactly? I know... it's that Cosmic Disco Sound we've been listening to here at Manifest Destititute and Dancing at Akult for a hot minute. So if you haven't yet, come on up and jump on the funk train people...Franz Ferdinand just officially invited you. (and believe me, they've been trying for years!!!)
